LET IT BURN

LET IT BURN

CONTRIBUTOR | Andrea Tan

Venice is at a time where artists and any kind of creative individuality is at the brink of extinction. Amongst the forest of wealthy technology startups that are obvious contributors to this onslaught; exists the Venice Art Crawl.

Juxtaposed within the companies that hoard property by driving out small individual businesses from their space and the other company that is eliminating rental housing by encouraging pseudo hotels, yes Snapchat and Air Bnb, talking about you, the Venice Art Crawl is the non-profit that encourages the not yet known artist to show their art and small businesses to open up their walls to show art. The Venice Art Crawl also encourages the feeling of community by getting people out into the neighborhood. You probably had no idea your neighbor was a painter but now do; because of the Art Crawl you were able to see their work at a  shop or restaurant you probably do not frequently visit.

The Venice Art Crawl is an all volunteer run organization and like many good things can become extinct because it completely relies on help from local businesses via sponsorships and fundraisers for operational costs. In order for the Venice Art Crawl to survive, the community needs to continue to give monetary support and lend a hand before, during and after the events.  We simply cannot continue to complain about companies that contribute to our community's decline when this [VAC] needs as much of your attention.

The Venice Art Crawl happens four times a year with the last one happening on September 21st; they also produce the Venice Afterburn, a free event full of Burning Man art happening on September 22nd and 23rd at Windward Circle.
